Open Coffee Θεσσαλονίκης, 12η συνάντηση [Updated x2]

Το OpenCoffee Θεσσαλονίκης ετοιμάζει την αποχαιρετιστήρια συνάντηση του καλοκαιριού. Την Τρίτη 30 Ιουνίου, και ώρα 7:00 μμ, θα βρεθούμε για άλλη μια φορά στο Μουσείο Αθλητισμού.

Θα ανοίξουμε με τις παρουσιάσεις στις 7:30μμ:

Ο Martin Linkov θα μας επισκεφθεί από τη Βουλγαρία για να μιλήσει για το favit, ένα web 2.0 project που συγκεντρώνει διάφορες πτυχές της Online παρουσίας μας μαζί με εργαλεία social networking. Το favit πρόσφατα ξεκίνησε τη διεθνή του καριέρα ανοίγοντας για γλώσσες της Βαλκανικής.
Ο Αργύρης Μπεντίλας, θα παρουσιάσει τις δραστηριότητες της Total Eclipse, εταιρείας με έδρα τη Θεσσαλονίκη που τα τελευταία χρόνια παράγει ποιοτικά και διεθνούς εμβέλειας casual παιχνίδια. Πιο πρόσφατο έργο τους το υπέροχο Clockwork man.
Ο Σπύρος Ξανθός, από την Pattern Insight με έδρα στις ΗΠΑ/California θα μας μεταφέρει μια εικόνα του επιχειρείν εκεί, καθώς και κάποιες από τις εμπειρίες του.
Ο Γιώργος Κασσελάκης, θα παρουσιάσει για πρώτη φορά στο κοινό της Θεσσαλονίκης το Openfund, ένα project που στοχεύει στη στήριξη καινοτόμων ιδεών που κάνουν το άλμα από την ιδέα στο startup.
Από την Beta-CAE, πάλι από τη Θεσσαλονίκη, θα έχουμε μια παρουσίαση που ξεκινά από το γενικό θέμα επιχειρηματικότητα και φτάνει στο βασικό τους προϊόν το οποίο έχει αρκετές εφαρμογές, όπως προσομοίωση πρόσκρουσης μηχανικών μοντέλων αυτοκινήτων. Δεν πρόκειται για λογύδριο εταιρικού marketing, σας το υπόσχομαι.

Ακολουθεί καφές και δικτύωση, κατά τη μακρά παράδοση του Open Coffee.

Open Source Business Models Workshop

Ανάμεσα στα πολλά και ενδιαφέροντα που μπορεί κανείς να ανακαλύψει στο 4ο Συνέδριο Δημιουργών ΕΛ/ΛΑΚ, το ακόλουθο workshop μάλλον θα κεντρίσει ακόμα περισσότερο το ενδιαφέρον αρκετών από τους αναγνώστες του παρόντος blog.

Open Source Business Models το αντικείμενο, Πολυτεχνειούπολη ΕΜΠ ο τόπος, το ευέλικτο απόγευμα του Σαββάτου η ώρα διεξαγωγής, και την κουβέντα θα ανοίξουν οι:

– Δημήτρης Ανδρεάδης ασχολείται επαγγελματικά με το ανοιχτό λογισμικό από το 2004, όταν δέχτηκε την πρόταση να δουλέψει απομακρυσμένα για ένα start-up που πρόσφερε υπηρεσίες γύρω από τον JBoss, τον πιο δημοφιλή OpenSource JavaEE application server. Η εταιρεία JBoss υπήρξε από τους θεμελιωτές του Professional OpenSource και εξαγοράστηκε το 2006 από την Red Hat, ενώ ο Δημήτρης σήμερα διευθύνει την διεθνή ομάδα από developers που αναπτύσουν τον JBoss.

– Ο Νίκος Αναγνώστου είναι συνιδρυτής της Open For Business, εταιρείας που ειδικεύεται στην παροχή υπηρεσιών προς ΜΜΕ βασισμένων σε εφαρμογές ανοιχτού λογισμικού. Ο Ν.Α. θα παρουσιάσει το βασικό business model λειτουργίας μιας επιχείρησης γύρω από το ανοιχτό λογισμικό που αφορά το τρίπτυχο υπηρεσιών Support – Training – Consulting και πως αυτό μπορεί να πάρει συγκεκριμένη μορφή είτε με ανάπτυξη είτε με υιοθέτηση κώδικα ανοιχτού λογισμικού.

– Ο Δημήτρης Γλέζος είναι μέλος του Fedora Board και ιδρυτής της Indifex, εταιρείας που δημιουργεί προϊόντα ελεύθερου λογισμικού στον τομέα του πολυγλωσσικής δημοσίευσης περιεχομένου. Ο Δημήτρης θα παρουσιάσει πώς το μοντέλο ανάπτυξης ελεύθερου λογισμικού μπορεί να μεταμορφώσει την επαγγελματικές πορεία ενός προγραμματιστή, και πώς υπήρξε καταλύτης στην επιτυχία του Transifex, του κορυφαίου
προϊόντος της Indifex.

– Ο Γρηγόρης Χωματάς ασχολείται επαγγελματικά με το ανοικτό λογισμικό από το 2001. Υπήρξε πρόεδρος του Συλλόγου Χρηστών και Φίλων Linux Ελλάδος (HEL.L.U.G) και είναι ιδρυτής της BetaCONCEPT, εταιρείας που παράγει Επιχειρησιακές Υποδομές Ανοικτού Λογισμικού με κύριο τομέα εστίασης την Διαχείριση Γνώσης και Περιεχομένου. Ο Γ.Χ. θα αναφερθεί αφενός στις μοναδικές δυνατότητες που προσφέρουν οι τεχνολογίες ανοικτού λογισμικού για την ανάπτυξη επιχειρηματικότητας (start ups) από νέους επιστήμονες τεχνολογιών πληροφορικής, αφετέρου στο σημαντικό προβάδισμα γνώσης και καινοτομίας που μπορούν να πετύχουν οι Ελληνικές Εταιρείες Πληροφορικής στο ισχυρά ανταγωνιστικό διεθνές περιβάλλον, αν υιοθετήσουν κάποιο από τα επιτυχημένα επιχειρησιακά μοντέλα που βασίζονται στην παραγωγή ανοικτού λογισμικού.

Open Coffee Athens XXIV – Open Coffee goes VC Forum

We’re finishing another great Open Coffee season of start-up events and networking, with a flagship event just like a year ago. This time, the scenery is not the coastside, but the elegant Hilton hotel (plus the Galaxy bar featuring the best view in Athens), and the co-host is not TechCrunch, but Venture Capital Forum, the biggest of investment events in the broader region.
So, we’re happy to announce that Open Coffee Athens XXIV will take place within the 10th International Venture Capital Forum, in the evening of Tuesday, June 16th, while we’d like to thank TANEO for this tremendous opportunity.

The whole day is full of great speeches, featuring two ministers and the best from both the entrepreneurs and investors world, however the best part comes at the end, with a full Open Coffee event in the context and content that you love. Access is free and open as usual, and for this special event we’re hosting 5-minute investor pitches from all start-ups that have presented and being distinguished during the year in our events around Greece, plus we consider fundable. What follows is the program in detail:

Speakers

Here you’ll find the full-day agenda, while the presentations to take place within the Open Coffee event are:

– Federico Carrasco, General Manager, will present Grebooca, an 8 month old greek start-up with offices in both Palo Alto California and Athens. Grebooca introduced early this year the facebook social network platform Gameyola, a distribution and monetization platform for casual flash games. Recently, Gameyola received the fbFund prize, provided by facebook, and will participate in the fbFund rev 2009 co-developent round.

– Argiris Bendilas, CEO & co-founder of Total Eclipse, will present the roadmap and track record of his company. The latter one includes fantastic -and at the same time successful- game titles like The Clockwork Man, while he will highlight investing opportunities in the casual games industry and his company alone.

– Kostis Mamassis, founder, will present Megaventory, a really light web application for inventory management, which comes to replace the anything but limited needs an ERP system places in small and medium enterprises. On top of that, remote access, customization and collaboration capabilities form a really appealing offering, better described as an “ERP for dummies”.

– Alexis Ballas, founder, will present Cytopia and a project that partly derived from his work on it, Cambo Industries. The latter one consists of virtual world architects, building virtual worlds and the campaigns to support them, while its founding team brings together experience from big brands and the media industry.

– Jiannis Georgiadis, co-founder and CEO, will present Rento. Founded back in 2008, Rento attempts to revolutionize the way to offer and search for housing via the web, providing innovative and quality services in a simple and friendly way. Rento has already provided its services to more than 6.000 owners and 230.000 visitors

– Dimitris Glezos, founder and Chief Engineer, will pitch Indifex, the start-up that revolutionizes the way software translations are performed today, leveraging on the power of Transifex open source tool, and already utilized by thousands of translators and developers, and big instritutions such as Fedora, Red Hat and others.

– Finally, George Kasselakis will provide you with every single detail that you want to learn regarding the Open Fund, in parallel opening the call for applications.

Schedule
You may join the event from early in the morning (the agenda starts at 10.00 in the morning), or a little bit before the Open Coffee speeches, which start at 18.30. Before or during these, you may network and enjoy your coffee or drinks right next to the main hall, while right after the event, there is also the option of Galaxy bar for further networking.

Access if free and open to everyone and especially you, however it is required to fill the VC Forum registration form (registration is valid for the whole day event). You may also leave a comment here or rsvp in the facebook event, to further encourage networking.

4o Συνέδριο Δημιουργών ΕΛ/ΛΑΚ

Το 4ο Συνέδριο Ελλήνων Δημιουργών Ανοιχτού Κώδικα λαμβάνει χώρα την επόμενη Παρασκευή 19 και Σάββατο 20 Ιουνίου, με εύρος και ποιότητα περιεχομένου εξαιρετικού ενδιαφέροντος, που μάλλον θα σας κρατήσουν μακριά από τις παραλίες και εντός της Πολυτεχνιούπολης Ζωγράφου, για ένα άκρως ενδιαφέρον διήμερο. Η αίθουσα τελετών του ΕΜΠ και οι γύρω αίθουσες φιλοξενούν πληθώρα παρουσιάσεων, εργαστηρίων και παράλληλων εκδηλώσεων, με αντικείμενο αναφοράς δραστηριότητες όχι μόνο ερευνητικές και εκπαιδευτικές, αλλά -ίσως πρωτίστως- επιχειρηματικές. Και, όταν η ενημέρωση για τις τελευταίες εξελίξεις στο χώρο συνοδεύεται με προσωπικές γνωριμίες με όλους εκείνους που τις δημιουργούν, μάλλον η ευκαιρία είναι μοναδική και το event κάτι που δεν πρέπει να χάσετε. dotNETZone – 30ο event

Όπως είχε αναφερθεί και σε παλαιότερη ανάρτηση, το dotNETZone.gr είναι η πρώτη και δημοφιλέστερη on-line κοινότητα για software developers με εξειδίκευση στο .NET και γενικότερα σε τεχνολογίες ανάπτυξης λογισμικού της Microsoft. Χρήστες της κοινότητας είναι επαγγελματίες, φοιτητές αλλά και ερασιτέχνες με κοινό σημείο το πάθος τους για τον προγραμματισμό. Σκοπός του dotNETZone.gr είναι να δημιουργηθεί ένα ολοκληρωμένο περιβάλλον για την ενημέρωση των μελών της, γύρω από τις Συζητήσεις που είναι και η καρδιά του dotNETZone! Κάπου εκεί, ανάμεσα στις συζητήσεις και τα blogs του dotNETZone, συχνάζει και ο διάσημος Ζαχαρίας Δεντοφτιάχνω με τις κωμικές αλλά και οικείες σε όλους μας περιπέτειές του. Σημαντική δραστηριότητα της κοινότητας αποτελούν και οι off-line συναντήσεις-events. Λαμβάνουν χώρα τακτικά και με αφορμή συγκεκριμένα κάθε φορά θέματα, εργαλεία ή τεχνολογίες ανάπτυξης λογισμικού
συγκεντρώνουν μέλη της κοινότητας. To dotNETZone.gr ξεκίνησε τον Ιούνιο του 2004. Την ευθύνη της κοινότητας έχουν ο διαχειριστής και οι συντονιστές της. Η κοινότητα αριθμεί περισσότερα από 3300 εγγεγραμμένα μέλη (Φεβρουάριος 2009).

Την Πέμπτη 11 Ιουνίου στις 19:30, διοργάνουμε το 30o dotNETZone.gr Community Event, στις εγκαταστάσεις της Microsoft Hellas (Κηφισίας 221, Μαρούσι ). Η παρουσίαση θα γίνει από τον Μάνο Κελαϊδίτη και τον Δημήτρη Παπαδημητρίου με θέμα «SQL Server 2008 – Τα νέα χαρακτηριστικά των Database και Reporting Engine». Όπως κάθε φορά, έχουμε δωράκια για τους παρευρισκόμενος. Συγκεκριμένα την Πέμπτη μια άδεια χρήσης Visual Studio 2008.

OpenCoffee XXIII – the minutes

Alex Kombogiannis and Giorgos Kontos of mpgreek presented their company and how it started in 2004 without any VC funding. They launched from Astoria, NY in 2005, and in the first four months they had managed to earn 30K USD. One of the first problems they encountered is that labels didn’t even know back then what ‘mp3 download’ means but meeting the right (i.e. open-minded) managers, having a ready product and making payments always on time (which created trust) helped. Their traffic picked up mainly via whitelabel and co-branding and lots of work later, in 2007 they started selling ads, opened offices in Athens and had revenues greater than 850k – but even then VC funding was out of their reach. Eventually in 2008 the deal with internetq was signed however. internetq is a 1200 sms campaigns/year company with offices in 8 countries, strong mobile partrnerships with major telcos and an overall strong presence in the sector.

According to mpgreek the greek market has many difficulties: it is small, there are no resources for new entrepreneurs, the regulation is not beneficial and cash flow remains a problem. VCs are very few and not specialised for our market and on top of that it’s hard to find good managers. On the other hand, exactly because the market is small it’s easy to dominate even if mildly succesful and it’s easy to navigate. Furthermore, localisation is easy (ideas can be transferred from abroad with minimum tweaking) and labor costs are low as such somehow offsetting the market’s drawbacks. Overall, it’s hard to get acquired in Greece but not impossible – you have to find the right relation (as internetq and mpgreek did)

Dave Krupinski of care.com shared the wisdom he has gathered regarding fundraising and how VCs operate. Firstly, he made clear that out of all the business plans reviewed only <1% of them are funded. Of that, approximately 40% fail, 40% break-even and 20% yield high returns (10 times). Apart from that, what’s common for all VCs is that they are accountable to their investors too and want to invest in good teams and good track records. All VCs will be interested to know whether the proposed business model has been tested and will require a solid exit strategy. However, not all VCs are the same. They differ on what they invest on (companies in beta, companies that have just launched, companies with set customer-base etc). Some may want a controlling stake, while other won’t. They may also differ by industry, by stage of development, by the amount of investment, the frequency of investment and the level of involvement, support and advice they provide. For example, early stage investors tend to locate near their investments.

Sokratis Papafloratos of trustedplaces.com presented his company which started off at 2006 and has raised 1M so far. The company employs 8 people currently in London and Tel-Aviv. It’s about providing local search based on your friends – “social networking with a purpose” as Sokratis accurately pointed out. Their business model is based on offering to companies a number of packages: a free one where they can take control of their profile, receive notifications and apply some basic edits and two premium packages with which they can enhance their profile and drive traffic to their business using ads and geo ads. Apart from ads they include local sales and licensing (leasing of their platform/content). For more details be sure to catch the upcoming video of the trustedplacs story.

George Tziralis ended the night by presenting the OpenFund. After a brief introduction about the long road that the OpenCoffee has come (2 years, 40 events, 130 speeches, 100s of participants) and the current situation in our industry in Greece academically (1.7% hold MSc or PhD, #1 in EU students abroad, top in scientists and engineers) and community-wise (startups exist, they are able to succeed and there is interest and potential), he announced OpenFund which aims to cover the two missing pieces of funding and support that could turn the situation around. By providing seed capital, monitoring and advice to the best five companies selected for ‘incubation’ in four months cycles we believe that we will take the first few steps of tapping the untouched potential of this community. The whole effort has been fortunate enough to start off with the good news of Piraeus Bank commiting 250K of anchor investment.
